This tutorial will guide you through a full installation of the Maverick Meerkat or Natty Narwhal Beta on a USB HDD.
I made a successful installation on a Lenovo T400 already running Windows 7.
1. Download the .iso image from the ubuntu website or the "testing" website
2. Partition your USB HDD
3. Burn the iso image to create a live CD/DVD. You may use a pen drive as well
4. Boot using the LIVE medium and choose Install Ubuntu. Your USB HDD should be plugged in
5. Go through the steps of installation and choose your HDD partition & swap area.
6. Choose the partition on USB HDD which you have selected for installation , for the boot loader installation as well. This is a crucial step. If you do not do this, the MBR on the internal HDD will be rewritten
7. Complete the installation and reboot
8. Choose your USB HDD from the boot devices and enjoy a full version of UBUNTU.
